G.M. Nair's Excuse For A Newsletter #10

Wide Load

BOO!

Did I scare you despite the fact that you had to intentionally click through to this newsletter and then choose to read the header to this section? Anyway, it’s spooky season, everyone - and I thought: What better way to terrify people than to send an unsolicited newsletter after a lengthy absence? And on Friday the 13th no less!

But I do have some news to share with you!

The Duckett & Dyer: Dicks For Hire Series Is Going Wide!

Yes, it’s going wide!

What Does That Mean?

It means that all three books (and all future books - whenever they get written) are now available on ebook platforms BEYOND Amazon.Com! That includes Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play, and several library apps!

Yeah, But What Does That Mean For Me?

Probably not much! It’s more of a marketing thing than anything. And if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already bought and read my books. So nothing’s really going to change at all, unless you read these books on Kindle Unlimited, because they’re not going to be on there anymore. This’ll mostly affect people who didn’t grab the ebooks while on Amazon - like the non-Kindle having friends you’ll urge on, right?

Why No More Kingle Uplibited?

Well, first of all: “Kindle Unlimited™”, and second of all: in recent months the Amazon Kindle Unlimited system has become a lot less lucrative as a platform. (If you don’t want to read some author-specific opinions, skip to the end.)

Previously, where I was earning ~$2-$2.25 for someone who read an entire book on Kindle Unlimited, I noticed that number dropped down to ~$0.90-$1.70 in the early part of 2023.

Why?

I don’t know the inscrutable machinations of Jeff Bezos (or, as I call him, Jeff BENZOS). But if I had to venture a guess, I’d have to say there’s been a large influx of low quality AI-written books - and now that more pages are out there, the price per page has fallen significantly. So, once again, AI has ruined everything.

So are you saying you’re only in this for the money?

Yes, DAMMIT. But also, I’ve always wanted to make Duckett & Dyer available to as many people as possible, and on starting out, Amazon seemed to be the quickest way to recoup my costs. (Dealing with the Devil is usually the best way to do that.) But thanks to everyone who’s bought my books so far, I’ve more than recouped them - which is no mean feat for an indie author, so I can no longer justify keeping them Amazon exclusive - especially for no real monetary benefit.

So, as a result, I’ll be terminating my contract with Satan and once I finish this summoning circle and figuring out how to drawn a pentagram (all my attempts end up being a Star of David - and I don’t know what to do with all these rabbis that apparate in) - Duckett & Dyer will be saying goodbye to Amazon exclusivity and will be available everywhere ebooks are sold this Halloween!

What’s Next For Duckett & Dyer?

Well, after an extended break, I think I’m finally ready to jump back into the world of Duckett & Dyer. And since NaNoWriMo is coming up, I’m gonna use that to jumpstart the next books.

That being said, the 4th official installment of the Duckett & Dyer series - The Curse Of Hitler’s Tomb - is still a ways a way. My current priority will be two-fold:

First, a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure™ book:

Of course, if you know anything about Choose-Your-Own-Adventure™ books, you’ll know that the “Choose-Your-Own-Adventure™” company can be incredibly litigious and sues anyone who publishes under the trademarked term “Choose-Your-Own-Adventure™”. So in an effort to reduce my already copious legal bills, I’ll be publishing under the label of:

And I’ll be trademarking that, just on principle.

And the second project I’ll be working on is another series of shorts and a Dungeons & Dragons inspired novella, some of which will be making their way into a new, collected edition of the first 3 books:

So, yes, there’s a lot going on in the Duckett & Dyer multi-verse, and you’ll just have to stay tuned to this newsletter to find out more, because I recently quit Twitter.

Until next time!
